Dechert Celebrates 25 Years in Boston
September 26, 2012
Dechert News Release

Dechert LLP is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its Boston office. At the time of its opening under the name of Dechert, Price & Rhoads, Boston was the firm’s seventh office overall and its fifth in the United States. The firm now spans the globe with 26 offices, including 13 U.S. locations.

“Back in the 1980’s, most law firms were regionally focused. Opening the Boston office was one of Dechert’s early steps to becoming a global firm,” said Timothy Blank, who joined the firm in 1989 and is now the managing partner for the Boston. “Boston as a city has long played a major role in the financial services industry, and as that influence has grown over the past quarter century, so has Dechert’s Boston office, along with the firm as a whole.”

Dechert opened in Boston in October 1987 under the direction of three partners: Sheldon A. Jones and James M. Storey, who focused their practices on the financial services and investment company industry, and the late Alan L. Lefkowitz, a corporate and bankruptcy law attorney. All three joined Dechert from Gaston Snow & Ely Bartlett.

“Our decision to open in Boston marked an important milestone for the development of our premier financial services practice and for the development of the firm generally,” said Dechert CEO Daniel O’Donnell.

The firm originally opened in temporary space on State Street, then moved to Ten Post Office Square. The firm has been in its current location in the Hancock Tower since 2003.

Joseph Fleming, now co-chair of the firm’s Financial Services practice, joined the firm in 1988 and relocated to Boston in 1992 to help the firm continue its growth in that important sector.

“I think we are well-positioned as a firm to support the industries represented in the Boston area, in particular the financial services industry,” Fleming said. “In particular, our global presence and the extensive reach of our financial services practice is uniquely able us to help clients in these challenging times.”

Thirty-nine attorneys, including 12 partners, are now resident in the Boston office, practicing in Financial Services, Finance & Real Estate, Complex Commercial Litigation, Intellectual Property and Tax.

“Today, Boston is a key component of Dechert’s global focus, and we look forward to being a part of the bright future for Boston’s legal and business community,” Blank said.
