Hope S. Freiwald is a trial lawyer at Dechert LLP, whose practice includes a broad range of complex toxic tort, product liability, commercial, and consumer class action cases In 2013, Ms. Freiwald was named “Lawyer of the Year” in Philadelphia for defendants in product liability litigation by Best Lawyers in America. Ms. Freiwald also was highlighted as a “Litigation Star” by Benchmark Litigation 2013 and 2014 and as a “Life Sciences Star” by LMG Life Sciences in 2012 and 2013. Ms. Freiwald also has been noted for her work in mass tort, class action and product liability litigation by US News and Best Lawyers in America.
Ms. Freiwald’s experience includes serving as trial counsel and leading defense strategies for numerous companies faced with complex, multi-jurisdictional litigation, typically involving scientific and public health issues. She was one of Merck’s trial counsel in litigation related to the painkiller Vioxx®, and also helped spearhead AstraZeneca’s strategy behind its successful defense of its branded medicine, Seroquel®. She represented joint owners of a nuclear power plant in litigation against a third owner after a safety event caused a forced shutdown. Currently, she is involved in an investigation arising out of a chemical spill, which led to significant contamination of a public water system. She also is defending a major retailer against claims that a particular ingredient in a popular nutritional supplement caused toxic injuries.
She regularly advises companies on reducing and managing litigation risks. In particular, she has advised corporate clients regarding risk mitigation and litigation strategies related to benzene, asbestos, and ground water contamination claims. She also has provided counsel regarding silica and other toxic exposure risks arising out of hydraulic fracking.
Ms. Freiwald is a frequent author and speaker regarding complex litigation in the chemical, life sciences and energy industries. She has been featured in The National Law Journal, Legal Times, Law360 and other prominent legal publications as well as on the regional television program Law Journal TV.
