James D. Ragon focuses his practice on patent litigation matters. Mr. Ragon has experience representing clients in both life sciences and high technology. In life sciences, he has experience in technologies such as medical devices and medical grade materials. In high technology, Mr. Ragon has experience with technologies related to computer hardware and software, and wireless cellular communications and related infrastructure equipment.
Prior to joining Dechert, Mr. Ragon served as a judicial extern for both Justice Gilbert Nares of the California Court of Appeal’s Fourth Appellate District (2006) and the Honorable Phyllis J. Hamilton of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California (2007). Prior to law school, he worked as a process engineer and manager for a major consumer products manufacturer.
Significant Representations
- Medtronic, Inc. et. al. v. AGA Medical Corporation, (N.D. Cal.). Represented Medtronic in a multi-patent infringement dispute related to the material properties and behavior of accused medical device products. This case proceeded to trial in July 2009. Participated in the trial team that obtained a favorable jury verdict for Medtronic, winning a multi-million dollar damages award. In December of 2009, Mr. Ragon also represented Medtronic in a five day bench trial related to issues of obviousness-type double patenting and the "safe harbor" of 35 U.S.C. § 121
