A decade ago, our partner Jeremy Zucker helped to found a non-profit organization called Freedom Now (www.freedom-now.org). Freedom Now represents prisoners of conscience around the world on a pro bono basis, using legal and political advocacy to secure their release from prison. While other organizations (such as Amnesty and Human Rights Watch) call attention to the plight of such prisoners, only Freedom Now takes them on as clients (typically we are retained by spouses or other close family relations) and continues to represent them until they are freed. Freedom Now has represented some very well known prisoners of conscience, including the only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize winner, as well as many who are far less well known. Clients have included leading political opposition figures as well as journalists, editors, bloggers, human rights lawyers, religious figures, musicians and doctors, among others, and they have been imprisoned in the Americas, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
While Freedom Now’s small staff (located in D.C.) handles some cases, its leverage comes from referring cases out to law firms. This training is for those interested in getting involved in the work of Freedom Now. The training will provide an overview of human rights advocacy as it pertains to individual prisoners of conscience. While presenting some of Freedom Now cases as illustrations, primary topics covered will include applicable international law and standards, legal venues and processes for case submission, and effective advocacy strategies.
