Dechert LLP announced today that the Honorable James M. McGuire, an Associate Justice in the First Judicial Department of New York State’s Appellate Division, is joining the firm as a partner in its New York office. Judge McGuire is expected to join the firm in late June.

“We are extremely pleased to have an attorney of Judge McGuire’s caliber join our litigation team,” Dechert Chairman Barton J. Winokur said. “His strong background in dealing with strategic legal issues and his appellate experience will greatly benefit our clients.”

“I’m excited about returning to private practice at such a prestigious firm as Dechert. I look forward to being a part of a team of extraordinarily talented lawyers,” said McGuire.

McGuire will focus his practice on complex commercial litigation, including sophisticated business disputes, internal investigations, white collar and securities litigation, and regulatory matters. He will also work with Dechert’s International Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution practices.

In addition to his current position, he has served as a Justice in the 11th Judicial District for the Supreme Court of the State of New York.

“Judge McGuire has a keen ability to get to the heart of intricate legal issues and his knowledge of the courts will be of great value to our team,” said Dechert chairman-elect Andrew J. Levander, who is a member of the firm’s White Collar and Securities Litigation group.

McGuire also previously served in the office of New York Governor George E. Pataki as Chief Counsel. He advised the Governor on all pending legislation, litigation and legal issues affecting the day-to-day operations of the state. He also advised on all legal issues arising out of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, assisted in the drafting of the Governor’s program legislation, and initiated and supervised landmark litigation between the executive and legislative branches regarding the constitutional budget process.

He also worked as the Deputy Chief of the Appeals Bureau for the New York County District Attorney’s Office, where he argued and supervised appeals before state and federal appellate courts and supervised investigations and trials involving official corruption and organized crime, and as Deputy Counsel of the New York State Commission on Government Integrity, where he conducted and supervised investigations and handled litigation brought by and against commission established to investigate government integrity matters and recommend reforms.

McGuire was also counsel for White & Case LLP from 2003-2004 and was an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP from 1985-1987.

McGuire is a graduate of Fordham College (B.A, 1975) and Cornell Law School (J.D., 1980). He is a member of the New York Bar and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
