Dechert Wins Two LMG Life Sciences “Collaboration Deal of the Year” Awards

Dechert has won two “Collaboration Deal of the Year” awards as part of the 2015 LMG Life Sciences Awards. The awards honor the lawyers, law firms and in-house counsel teams that made the greatest contributions to the life sciences industry in 2015. These awards were presented during a ceremony in New York City on September 16.
Dechert’s corporate practice was recognized for its complex work on two of the most significant life sciences collaborations in 2015 – Celgene Corporation’s agreement with Juno Therapeutics to advance novel cancer treatments and Johnson & Johnson's agreement to join forces with Google to innovate robotic surgical technology.
With Celgene and Juno’s collaboration, Celgene gains the option to globally co-commercialize certain oncology and cell therapy auto-immune programs as well as commercialize co-developed Juno programs outside of North America, while Juno will be responsible for commercialization of co-developed Celgene programs within North America and retain rights in those territories. The deal, valued at approximately US$1 billion, was announced in June 2015. Dechert’s team advising Celgene was led by corporate partners David Schulman and Tony Chan, intellectual property partner Thomas Rayski, and corporate associate Katherine Miller.
In March 2015, Johnson & Johnson announced that Ethicon, a medical equipment developer within the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, had signed a definitive agreement to enter into a strategic collaboration with Google, working with the Life Sciences team on advancing surgical robotics to benefit surgeons, patients and health care systems. Dechert’s team advising Johnson & Johnson was led by corporate partners Kristopher Brown and Jonathan Schur, as well as corporate associate Christian Matarese.
