Steven Fogel, Managing Partner of Dechert’s London office, explains why he believes that law firms will not be able to resist the urge to merge. There will be defensive pressures on firms to merge because people are generally planning for a tougher commercial climate. Fogel reports that the current generation of leaders would be more likely to attempt to make merger economics work in a downturn; in turn, this makes the achievement of a U.S./U.K. merger all the more desirable because of the protective wall it can build against competitors.
