Margaret Mortimer

Margaret Mortimer represents companies and individuals in government and internal investigations as well as complex commercial disputes. She represents clients before federal and state courts and in investigations brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. 

Ms. Mortimer’s experience includes formulating and implementing defense strategies, representing witnesses for interviews with governmental and internal investigators, examining witnesses in court, conducting depositions, drafting dispositive and discovery motions and executing fact gathering strategies. She has been recognized by Super Lawyers New York as a “Rising Star” for the past two consecutive years. 

Ms. Mortimer maintains an active pro bono practice, working with the ACLU Voting Rights Project to successfully challenge restrictive voting laws in Kansas. For this work, she received the firm’s Samuel E. Klein Pro Bono award.  

Ms. Mortimer’s previous experience includes representation of pharmaceutical, technology and telecommunication companies in domestic and cross-border intellectual property, cybersecurity and privacy matters. Prior to joining Dechert, she served as a law clerk in U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein’s Judiciary Committee Office and was a student fellow at the Engelberg Center on Innovation Law & Policy. She currently serves as Co-Chair of the Young Lawyers Committee of New York Intellectual Property Association.

  • A former CEO of a public company in an internal investigation, an arbitration, government investigations and a securities litigation in the Southern District of New York.
  • A former CEO of a public company in an SEC investigation, a securities litigation and related claims brought by private plaintiffs in the District of New Jersey.
  • A former CEO of a public company in an investigation brought by the SEC.
  • A pharmaceutical company in an investigation brought by the DOJ and in a related internal investigation.
  • Multiple international bank employees in an investigation brought by the DOJ regarding alleged sanctions violations.
  • Multiple debt and equities traders in investigations brought by the CFTC, the DOJ and related civil claims regarding allegations of market manipulation.
