Romain Maulin focuses his practice on European and French competition law. Mr. Maulin advises national and international clients on a wide array of issues pertaining to competition and distribution laws, with an emphasis on cartel and abuse of dominance investigations as well as merger control proceedings before the French Competition Authority and the European Commission. He regularly represents clients in leniency and settlement proceedings and assists in the set-up of compliance programs. Mr. Maulin advises clients active in the field of pharmaceuticals, energy, telecoms / new technologies, consumer goods and financial services.

Mr. Maulin is widely published and is a frequent lecturer at the University of Paris-Saclay and Saint-Étienne on issues pertaining to competition and contract law.

Prior to joining Dechert, Mr. Maulin served as an associate in the competition law department of a Magic Circle firm as well as another international law firm. His previous experience also includes completing internships at the General Court of the European Union in Luxembourg and at the legal staff for European Affairs of the French Prime Minister.

  • CIT Group Inc. on the sale of its Paris-based European rail leasing subsidiary group Nacco to German-based VTG Aktiengesellschaft for US$1.05 billion.
  • BNP Paribas in various enforcement actions initiated by the European Commission and in particular in the Credit Default Swaps (CDS) investigation which led to a closure decision (case 39.765).
  • Procter & Gamble Company in the context of a cartel proceeding before the French Competition Authority in the Detergent case (case 11-D-17).
  • A leading Internet services provider in an abuse of dominance case before the French Competition Authority in the sector of Internet connectivity (case 12-D-18).
