Gavin B. Watson advises clients on cross-border corporate and commercial transactions, as well as the development and financing of energy and infrastructure projects worldwide. His energy practice focuses particularly on oil & gas, refinery, petrochemical and related projects. Mr. Watson’s clients include sovereigns, governments, owners, developers, investors, financiers and export credit agencies connected with projects in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

He has been ranked in Chambers Global as a leading lawyer for corporate and commercial work in the United Arab Emirates since 2008. In Chambers Global, 2017, he is recognised in particular for his experience advising on project developments and clients have described him as "enormously valuable" and a "good communicator" with an ability to provide "very good, practical, commercial advice." Chambers Global, 2016 highlights his practice in M&A transactions and corporate structuring and cites interviewee testimony that "he is very strong in corporate guidance and advisory work" and emphasises his experience in oil and gas matters. Prior to joining Dechert, Mr. Watson was a partner in the Dubai office of an international law firm.

  • Hass Petroleum Group, a leading oil marketing company in Africa, on its sale of a strategic stake in the company to Oman Trading International, a global trading company that specializes in energy products.
  • Advising various government-related entities on a range of corporate matters including the acquisition of interests in energy and natural resource assets, the development of industrial and petrochemical facilities and the disposal of interests in transportation infrastructure projects.
  • A major Asian upstream energy company and certain subsidiaries on various corporate, finance and commercial matters including the development of contract areas in Iraq, compliance with U.S. and EU sanction regimes, and joint ventures in the MENA region.
  • An international energy trading company on various matters including the negotiation of a US$300 million borrowing base facility agreement, as well as certain corporate transactions and pre-dispute matters.
  • A private South East Asian exploration and production company on its potential acquisition of a significant offshore gas asset in North Africa.
