Andrea Zumbado* focuses her practice on international arbitration.

Prior to joining Dechert, Ms. Zumbado served as an Advisor in the International Arbitration, Dispute Settlement and OECD team at the Ministry of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica, and as a Foreign Associate at the international arbitration team of another leading law firm.

She also served as a legal assistant at a Costa Rican boutique litigation firm, as well as within the Public Defense team at the Supreme Court of Justice of Costa Rica.

  • A Latin American State against claims by a natural gas company related to the government’s intervention and planned liquidation of the company, with damages amounting to US $1 billion.
  • A Latin American State against claims by a Spanish company that holds a concession to provide motor vehicle inspection services in the capital city.
  • A Latin American State against claims by a Canadian mining company related to the development of a silver mine in the midst of a critical social crisis, with damages amounting to US $520 million.
  • The Republic of Costa Rica in five international arbitration cases before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
  • Nine American claimants for an alleged expropriation of their properties located inside a national park, for a total amount of US $18 million dollars.
  • A Canadian mining company, due to the cancellation of a gold mining exploration and exploitation concession, with damages amounting to at least US $100 million.
  • A Spanish Company working in the concession of the vehicle technical inspection, due to an alleged contract breach, with damages amounting to at least €261million.
  • A Swiss liquefied petroleum gas company, due to an alleged breach in the tariff fixation process, with damages amounting to at least US $30 million.
  • Eight American Claimants for the alleged withdrawal of construction permits for a real estate project near the coast, with damages amounting to at least US $70 million.
  • The first CAFTA-DR trade dispute against El Salvador due to the refusal to apply the benefits to all the parties of the Agreement.A dispute against the United States under CAFTA-DR, due to the nullification and impairment of benefits of the use of the Ethyl Alcohol mixtures quota amounts for preferential treatment under the Agreement.
  • A dispute against the European Union, due to the unilateral inclusion of banana puree in the quota of sugar and goods with high sugar content, nullifying the benefits under the EU-Central America Association Agreement.
  • A dispute brought by Mexico against Costa Rica due to the application of phytosanitary measures to the imports of avocados.
