Protecting Investments in Carbon Credits through Investment Treaties

Mark Mangan and Lukas Lim, partner and associate respectively, in Dechert’s international arbitration group and based in Singapore contributed an article in Issue 4 of Volume 20 of Oil, Gas & Energy Law (a journal that focuses on recent developments in the area of oil-gas-energy law, regulation, treaties, judicial and arbitral cases, voluntary guidelines, tax and contracting, including the oil-gas-energy geopolitics), a Special Issue on Carbon Neutral Energy.
The article provides a brief description of carbon sequestration and trading, illustrates the types of sovereign risk to which foreign investments can be exposed, and explains how investments in carbon sequestration projects can be protected through investment treaties.
