Are there opportunities to work with attorneys in other offices?

Dechert is organized along practice group lines, which means that matters are often staffed across offices. Whether you are a summer associate or associate, you will work with colleagues across geographic lines.

Can associates transfer between offices?

Dechert is a fully integrated firm consisting of 28 offices organized along practice group lines.  Within practice groups, the firm offers associates geographic flexibility. A Dechert associate can usually relocate as long as the associate's practice group is represented in the office to which the associate wishes to move.

Are there pro bono opportunities for associates?

At Dechert, you will find many opportunities to pursue pro bono work in support of the communities where we live and work. Associates are encouraged to participate in pro bono matters that suit their interests.

Our pro bono commitment runs deep. We are a signatory to the Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge® – which means that we’re committed to spending three percent of our total billable time annually on pro bono work – and are also a signatory to the United Kingdom’s Joint Protocol for Pro Bono Legal Work.

The devotion of our lawyers to high-quality pro bono work has earned Dechert dozens of accolades in recent years. These are just a few of them:

What are the firm’s billable hour requirements for associates and how does pro bono count towards these?

The annual target is 1950 billable hours. Associates are encouraged to devote up to 200 hours of their time to pro bono legal work, which is credited toward annual billable hours. All lawyers are required to perform at least 25 hours of pro bono work per year.

Does the firm have a Part-Time Policy?


We recognize the need for flexibility and balance in a high-performance industry like ours.  This is why Dechert has both a Reduced Hours and Flex Time policy. Our Flex Time policy allows attorneys to work from remote locations while maintaining a full-time schedule. By contrast, our Reduced Hours policy allows attorneys to work a reduced schedule overall.

Attorneys are eligible for partnership while working on a reduced or flex-time schedule. The standards for advancement for Reduced Hours or Flex Time attorneys are the same as those applied to full-time attorneys.
