Culture

It takes a committed, global team to deliver the excellence in service and innovative thinking our clients expect. Cultivating creativity to harness the very best ideas comes from respecting and valuing everyone’s voice, and creating a shared enjoyment in all that we do. At Dechert, we believe that building community within the workplace and with our clients – whether multinational companies or pro bono causes – is the key to success. It’s about building a firm where people are trusted and empowered to do their very best.

Gratitude

Andy Levander, firm Chair

"Gratitude is a powerful thing,” said Dechert's former-Chair Andy Levander. “A meaningful ‘thank you’ makes people on both sides of that conversation feel good, so we wanted to help people make a regular habit of gratitude.”

Specially designed postcards are distributed to employees, on which they can write brief notes of appreciation to be sent to fellow colleagues. As COVID-19 led to remote working, it was more important than ever to ensure our community maintained the bonds of connection and gratitude — accordingly, we adapted our postcards to become e-gratitude cards and over 1,000 cards were sent in the first week.

Well-being Week

Our people cannot achieve their fullest potential – and deliver exceptional client service – without taking the time to invest in and rejuvenate themselves. Dechert is dedicated to promoting a healthy integration of work and personal life through our THRIVE@Dechert Framework. This framework focuses on the physical, mental, emotional and financial well-being of our people. We provide access to resources such as: online fitness programs, tele-medicine assistance for both physical and mental health, as well as webinars and virtual support groups on a variety of topics. Every year, Dechert's global community participates in Well-being Week. It's a great time to support each other and embrace healthier living habits. Some of our activities have included a "what brings you joy" photo contest, a global steps challenge and a financial well-being seminar.

Innovation@Dechert

We Celebrate and Receive Recognition for Innovative Ideas

We take great pride in the innovative ideas and approaches that our people take, whether in relation to client work, the client experience or internally supporting our business operations. It is important that we acknowledge and recognize everyone for their contributions, and we do this in a variety of ways.

Annually, we recognize the efforts and accomplishments of our people who are making a difference on the innovation front through our Innovator Award but the recognition doesn’t stop there. Members of the Innovation Certificate Program are all recognized for their commitment to innovation when they pitch their ideas to the chief executives across the firm. The firm has a network of Innovation Ambassadors who are featured in articles, interviews and the like for their contributions to the firm and our clients on this front.

Externally, the firm has received recognition for our unique Innovation Certificate Program and our Summer Associate Innovation Bootcamp. To learn more click here

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Week

All of us at Dechert earnestly strive to be better allies and more inclusive leaders within the firm, across the legal industry and in our own neighborhoods, cities and countries. During our annual Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Week, our community participates in a variety of engaging and enlightening events.

The impact of racism is an unbearable concept for so many of us, but a part of the daily existence for many of our friends and colleagues. Dechert affirms without exception that Black lives matter. We share a commitment to working every day to better educate ourselves, examine our own biases on a daily basis and advance the causes of racial justice and social reform to create a fairer, more inclusive world.

Dechert’s Birthday Week

Each year we come together to celebrate the anniversary of Dechert's founding in 1875. It offers us an opportunity to learn about our firm’s history, celebrate where we are today and look ahead to where we’re going.

Dechert hosts a number of fun activities with colleagues as part of Birthday Week – previous events have included a special birthday cake class with a renowned chef, volunteer sessions for writing letters to first responders, deployed troops, isolated elders and sick children and a Dechert history quiz to name a few.

We’re grateful to all the members of our Dechert community who continue to honor and fulfill the firm’s most important traditions: our commitment to quality, exceptional service for our clients and a culture that values people.

Day of Service

One of our proudest annual traditions is the Dechert Day of Service. As part of our shared commitment to the communities in which we live and work, each Dechert office takes its own unique action to help our neighbors and make our cities better places for all.

Organizations we’ve recently partnered with include:

  • AIDS Walk NY
  • The Boston Esplanade Association
  • Dublin Hope Foundation Shoebox Appeal
  • Moscow's Project Kind Caps
  • Operation Backpack
  • Ronald McDonald House Charities
  • Special Olympics
  • Toys for Tots
  • The United Way
  • UK Haven House Garden Day
In these pages, you’ll see 145 examples of the impact of our pro bono and volunteer activities, sorted into a broad set of categories. Even with a list of 145 examples, there is no way we could completely capture all the great work to which thousands of people have contributed over a span of decades
