The New York Law Journal has recognized Emily Van Tuyl, a partner in Dechert’s product liability and mass torts practice, as a “Rising Star” in its New York Legal Awards 2025. The awards were established to honor those firms, lawyers and judges who, in the publication’s view, have made “a remarkable difference in the legal profession in New York.”
Ms. Van Tuyl is a litigator and trial lawyer who represents clients in federal and state court litigation at all stages, including managing fact and expert discovery; briefing jurisdictional, discovery, expert and dispositive motions; arguing motions; and otherwise defending clients in federal multidistrict and state coordinated proceedings. Over the course of her career, she has had a broad range of clients drawn from the pharmaceutical, medical device, consumer products, biotechnology, internet and e-commerce sectors.
Elected to the partnership at Dechert in 2023, Ms. Van Tuyl has been a member of multiple successful trial teams. She played an active role in Dechert’s defense of Getinge AB and Atrium Medical Corporation in more than 2,400 personal injury lawsuits involving hernia mesh products, including second-chairing the first and only jury trial in that litigation, after which the jury returned a full defense verdict. She also served as trial counsel in one of the first cosmetic talc cases to be reset for trial in 2023. In addition, she has had notable pretrial success in major mass torts, including for GSK in the California Zantac litigation, where her strategic leadership contributed to hundreds of dismissals.
Dechert and its lawyers also feature in several categories of the New York Legal Awards that will be decided at a ceremony in September. At a firmwide level, Dechert has been shortlisted for “Law Firm of the Year” – after a year in which a sustained focus on innovation and client service resulted in its best-ever financial results – and for “Law Firm Innovation” following the success of its Task Automation Initiative.
Dechert’s products liability and mass torts team has been shortlisted for “Litigation Department of the Year”, while the refinancing of New York’s iconic Rockefeller Center by means of a US$3.5 billion commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) loan has been shortlisted for “Real Estate Transaction of the Year”. A global finance team led by partner Jason Rozes and firm co-chair David Forti advised Bank of America and Wells Fargo on the CMBS loan, the largest for a single office property on record.
Winners in all categories of the New York Legal Awards will be honored at a ceremony at the Ziegfield Ballroom, New York City on September 4.
