Jonathan Tam, a San Francisco-based partner in Dechert LLP’s product liability and mass torts practice, has been recognized as a “Lawyer on the Fast Track” by The Recorder in its California Legal Awards 2022. Winners of the award are considered by the publication to be the next generation of legal leaders in California.

Mr. Tam, who was recently honored as a Law360 Rising Star in product liability and named to the Daily Journal’s Top 40 Under 40 list for 2022, is currently a finalist for “Young Lawyer of the Year” for litigation in The American Lawyer’s Industry Awards 2022.

Mr. Tam has represented major pharmaceutical companies, medical device companies and consumer electronic companies, and other innovative products manufacturers, in some of the most complex and high-stakes mass tort product liability litigations, multi-district litigations (MDLs), consumer fraud actions and class actions in the United States, including cases filed by State Attorneys General. He has led, managed, and handled various aspects of complex, nationwide litigations in state and federal courts, including serving as trial and appellate counsel. In particular, he has extensive experience litigating the admissibility of expert testimony. His work has led to the dismissal of plaintiffs’ general causation testimony, which resulted in summary judgment in favor of his clients in a number of high-stakes mass tort litigations.

This latest recognition comes amid Dechert’s implementation of a strategic plan to bolster its interdisciplinary corporate, litigation, and financial services capabilities in California. An ambitious West Coast expansion strategy has seen the firm welcome six new partners in San Francisco. These important new arrivals include corporate and securities partner Nicole Macarchuk, private fund formation partner Sonia Gioseffi, former federal prosecutor Hartley West, corporate governance litigator Rick Horvath, and relocated partners Joshua Hess (litigation) and Jonathan Stott (private equity M&A).

In 2020, Dechert also welcomed a product liability trial team led by Kimberly Branscome and Jay Bhimani to its Los Angeles office, and IP litigator Jennifer Swan to Silicon Valley. Other recent senior hires in California at counsel level include private equity specialist Maryam Naghavi (San Francisco), global finance lawyer Andrew Taggart (San Francisco) and product liability litigator Benjamin Sadun (Los Angeles), who was subsequently elected to Dechert’s partnership.
