Dechert’s Randy Mastro Recognized by American Lawyer for Victory in Long-Running Madison Square Garden Litigation

August 31, 2026

Dechert partner Randy Mastro has been recognized in The AmLaw Litigation Daily's Litigator of the Week: Runners-Up and Shout-Outs column for helping secure a decisive victory for Madison Square Garden (MSG) in its litigation with former New York Knicks player Charles Oakley.

Mr. Mastro led the team that secured a pair of significant victories for MSG in this long-running litigation. On August 14, Judge Richard J. Sullivan granted summary judgment in MSG’s favor, dismissing Oakley’s remaining claims, and separately upheld a sanctions award of more than US$640,000 against Oakley.

"This was a hard-fought matter that required a disciplined focus on the facts and the evidentiary record,” said Mr. Mastro. “We are pleased to have achieved this result for MSG after years of litigation."

The case stemmed from allegations arising out of Mr. Oakley’s removal from a 2017 Knicks game at Madison Square Garden and remained in litigation for nearly nine years until the court’s August 14 rulings brought it to a close.

The Dechert team was led by partner Randy Mastro.
