Dechert Twice Honored in The American Lawyer’s Global Legal Awards

December 06, 2018

Two Dechert deals were named as winners by The American Lawyer in the publication’s 2018 Global Legal Awards, which were established to honor the world’s most significant cross-border commercial legal matters.

Matters submitted were judged on their legal novelty, significance and geographical spread, along with the size of the financial stakes and favorability of the outcome to the client. Entries were divided into four main categories: disputes, mergers and acquisitions, finance, and citizenship.

CVS Health’s US$70 billion acquisition of health insurer Aetna, the largest healthcare services transaction in history, was named overall winner in the ‘Global M&A Deal of the Year’ category. A Dechert team led by partners Mike Cowie and Rani Habash served as antitrust counsel to CVS Health, helping steer one of the world’s most significant mergers to a successful close.

Dechert was also recognized for outstanding performance in cross-border restructuring, as the US$20 billion restructuring of Oi, one of the largest telecom providers in Brazil, was named ‘Global Finance Deal of the Year’. Dechert acted as U.S. and international coordinating counsel to the International Bondholder Committee in the largest judicial reorganization ever undertaken in Latin America.

Global Legal Awards winners were honored at a ceremony marking the American Lawyer Industry Awards on December 5 at Guastavino’s in New York.
