Washington, D.C. Dechert LLP, a leading global law firm, is pleased to announce that Michael H. McGinley has joined the firm as a partner focusing his practice on litigation, specifically appellate and complex commercial matters.

Mr. McGinley served most recently as Associate Counsel and Special Assistant to the President in the White House Counsel’s Office, where his responsibilities included the review of major legislative and regulatory actions and the confirmation of judicial nominees, including Justice Gorsuch. During his time in the White House, Mr. McGinley worked closely with the Department of Justice, the Office of Management and Budget, a number of federal agencies, and various congressional committees.

Mr. McGinley has experience representing clients at every level of the federal judiciary, as well as in numerous federal agencies and state courts. He has litigated a wide range of issues, including federal jurisdiction, Chevron deference, federalism, preemption, arbitration, labor law, tort law, securities and corporate law, contract rights, voting rights, free speech, religious freedom and many other constitutional issues.  Mr. McGinley also regularly advises clients on strategic and regulatory matters.

“Michael’s high-level White House and appellate experience will be most welcome to our clients requiring advice on complex legislative and regulatory matters,” said Matthew L. Larrabee, chair of Dechert’s global litigation practice group.

McGinley added, “While my time in government service was incredibly rewarding, I am excited to return to private practice at a global litigation powerhouse like Dechert. I look forward to working together with the firm’s team of top-tier litigators across subject matters.”

Mr. McGinley is the latest significant addition to the firm’s global litigation practice. Last week, the firm expanded its international trade practice with F. Amanda DeBusk and Melissa Duffy. Additional recent hires in the firm’s commercial litigation practice have included David H. Stern in Los Angeles and Christina Guerola Sarchio Washington DC.

Mr. McGinley also previously served as a law clerk to Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr., of the Supreme Court of the United States and to then-Judge Neil M. Gorsuch, of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School, where he was Supreme Court Chair of the Harvard Law Review, and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame.
