Karen Coppens, a Dechert LLP criminal defense and investigations lawyer, has been named to Global Investigations Review’s Women in Investigations 2018 list. GIR conducted a global survey across private practice, government agencies and in-house teams and selected the 100 women practitioners it considers the most outstanding in the investigations community.
London-based Coppens, who is fluent in Dutch, French and English, has advised on some of the world’s largest regulatory and internal investigations. Her work has a strong international focus, with particular emphasis on Africa, the Middle East and Europe (particularly France and the UK). She has acted for governments, heads of state and the CEOs, boards and audit committees of blue-chip companies in some of Dechert’s biggest investigations.
Coppens has also been extremely active in promoting the advancement of women in the profession. As London liaison for Dechert’s Global Women’s Initiative, her efforts to train women lawyers and mentor juniors earned her an Exceptional Teacher Award in 2017. She received a Samuel Klein Pro Bono Award for her pro bono efforts which included analyzing domestic violence laws in Serbia. She also co-coordinated the multi-firm Raising Her Voice project with Oxfam, which analyzed Kenya’s ratification of the Maputo Protocol bill on women’s rights and was commended by the Financial Times in its Innovative Lawyers Awards in 2014. She was also part of a team which was named a finalist for a Thomson Reuters Impact Award for analyzing abortion rights in Poland for SaveLIFE Foundation and has reported on sex selection for the Center for Reproductive Rights.
