Dechert advised multiple third-party complainants, including Getty Images and Yelp, in relation to the European Commission’s decade-long investigations into Google’s alleged abuse of its dominant position. On July 18, 2018, the Commission imposed a fine of €4.34B (US$5.04B) on Google, the largest such fine ever, which punishes Google’s use of its Android operating system to funnel search traffic to Google Search.
The Dechert team includes Alec Burnside, Marjolein De Backer and Maria Loudjeva, in the firm’s Brussels office.
This success follows Dechert’s work on the Commission’s earlier investigation of Google that led to a fine in 2017 of €2.42B (US$2.82B), for giving undue preference in search results to Google’s own specialist shopping services.
