The London GWI and IDC present: In conversation with Master McCloud

November 06, 2019

To support The First 100 Years, the ground-breaking project charting the journey of women in the legal profession, Dechert is sponsoring the launch of its latest film, featuring High Court judge, Master Victoria McCloud, who hears cases ranging from contractual disputes to historic child abuse, media and constitutional law.

Master McCloud is believed to be the UK’s first transgender judge. She is a full-time member of the judiciary, and additionally carries out research on artificial intelligence and online political discourse at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Oxford. Assigned male gender at birth, but knowing from very early childhood that that did not represent her own sense of her gender, Master McCloud transitioned to become Victoria and eventually came out at work. Her career continued to thrive, and she became a judge in 2006.

Dechert’s involvement with the project has been led by the firm’s Global Women’s Initiative and its Inclusion and Diversity Committee, which promote an inclusive culture and empower people to succeed. “Dechert is working hard to improve our gender diversity. We want to see equal representation of women, and other minorities, at all levels,” said Director of Diversity and Inclusion Satra Sampson-Arokium. “Master McCloud is an inspiration and reminds us to continue to strive towards that goal.”
