Dechert Secures Important Voting Rights Victory in Tennessee

June 05, 2020

Dechert LLP, along with The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Tennessee, secured an important victory for voting rights on June 4 when a Tennessee court has ruled the state must make absentee voting available to every eligible voter for all elections in 2020, including the August 6 primary and November 3 general election. For more information, please see the ACLU’s press release here.

The Dechert team included partners Neil Steiner and Angela Liu, associate Tharuni Jayaraman, and law clerk James Kilduff. Ms. Liu, who successfully argued the motion by Zoom videoconference on June 3, commented: “We are thrilled that the Court recognized that the state of Tennessee can and must offer its citizens the opportunity to vote by mail to avoid the risk of contracting or unknowingly transmitting COVID-19. We remain committed to ensuring that all eligible voters in the United States have the opportunity to vote in a safe and secure manner and to have their votes counted.”
