Dechert Leads the Charge on Voting Rights Cases Around the United States

August 28, 2020

Dechert LLP is leading the charge to protect the rights of all eligible citizens to vote safely and securely in the 2020 election despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the well-publicized issues with the United States Postal Service, and increasingly restrictive voting laws adopted by many states. The firm is currently actively litigating cases on a pro bono basis on behalf of leading civil rights organizations including the NAACP and the League of Women Voters in five states – Mississippi, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin – working alongside co-counsel from the ACLU, The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Free Speech For People, LatinoJustice PRLDEF, the Brennan Center for Justice and Southern Poverty Law Center. Dechert’s important work in the area of voting rights is led by New York-based litigation partner Neil Steiner, who was recently awarded the ABA’s Pro Bono Publico Award for 2020 for his work in this area.

“It’s critical now, more than ever, that all eligible citizens are able to vote safely and securely, and with confidence that their votes will be counted,” said Mr. Steiner.

For the past decade, Dechert has been a national trailblazer for protecting the rights of all Americans to exercise one of their most basic rights—the right to vote. Despite the protections offered by the United States Constitution, state constitutions, and several federal statutes, including the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965, jurisdictions across the country have sought to restrict access to the ballot box, through various measures, including photo identification laws, purging of voter rolls, and documentary proof of citizenship requirements. Dechert has been at the forefront of the legal challenges to these restrictive laws, including as lead trial counsel in five voting rights trials.
