The Latest On Managing Workplace Mental Health Issues

At the end of 2016, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission issued a resource document explaining and illustrating workplace protections afforded by the Americans with Disabilities Act to individuals who suffer from mental health conditions. The document, entitled “Depression, PTSD & Other Mental Health Conditions in the Workplace: Your legal Rights,” was designed by the agency to be “user-friendly,” to help those who suffer from mental health conditions understand their rights and how best to exercise them. Citing its charge data, the EEOC emphasized that discrimination on the basis of mental health conditions is a growing problem. During fiscal year 2016, the commission resolved approximately 5,000 charges based on mental health conditions and obtained approximately $20 million in damages for claimants.
