Joseph A. Tate

Joseph A. Tate has defended U.S. and foreign corporations, executives, lawyers, and others against allegations of white collar crime, with particular emphasis on securities, antitrust, patent fraud, and other regulatory issues, for more than 30 years. His practice also involves complex civil litigation and class actions, and he counsels clients on regulatory matters and internal investigations.

Since 2004, Mr. Tate has been designated as a leading lawyer for antitrust and general commercial litigation in Chambers USA, a referral guide for leading lawyers in the United States based on the opinions of their peers and clients. In its 2008 edition, Chambers noted that he is a “superb trial lawyer who tries cases and wins them” and “sets the bar for antitrust defense counsel.” He is also listed in The Best Lawyers in America and Benchmark Litigation.

In 2010, he was chosen as the “Philadelphia Lawyer of the Year” by Best Lawyers, which also recognized him for his work in Antitrust, Bet-the-Company Litigation, Commercial Litigation, and White Collar/Criminal Defense. For a number of years, he has also been selected as the top antitrust practitioner in Pennsylvania and a leading White Collar/Criminal Defense lawyer by Chambers.

Before entering private practice, Mr. Tate served as prosecutor for the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. A fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Mr. Tate is a frequent lecturer on issues involving criminal and antitrust law, and is an active faculty member of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Trial Advocacy Program. He is also a former chair of the Criminal Procedure Committee of the American Bar Association’s Antitrust Section. Mr. Tate serves as Chair of the Board of Consultors of Villanova Law School and in 2010, he was selected by Villanova Law School to receive the Alumni Award for outstanding leadership in service to the School of Law. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Community Legal Services of Philadelphia and received the 2011 Excellence Award from the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network.
