China Law & Practice Honors Dechert’s Asia Energy Team for Cross-border Deal Success

Dechert LLP’s Asia energy team was honored when ALM-owned China Law & Practice recognized Sinopec’s petrochemicals joint venture with SIBUR as “Projects & Energy Deal of the Year” in its China Law & Practice Awards 2021.
Dechert acted as legal advisor to Sinopec, China’s leading energy and chemicals company, in its joint venture agreement with SIBUR, Russia’s largest petrochemical company, to develop the Amur Petrochemical Project, projected to be the world’s largest basic polymer production facility. Sinopec purchased a significant equity interest in the project from SIBUR and will be its exclusive distributor in China.
A Dechert team spanning five offices on three continents handled the large, complex transaction, which involved aspects of Chinese, Russian, U.S. and European law. The core team working on the M&A and energy aspects was located in the firm’s Beijing, Hong Kong, and Moscow offices, with antitrust aspects handled by the firm’s Brussels-based antitrust team, and international trade and cross-border regulatory issues handled from Washington, D.C.
The transaction was previously honored as “Deal of the Year for Russia” by CEE Legal Matters, the leading publication covering legal and transactional news in Central and Eastern Europe.
Winners in the China Law & Practice Awards were honored at a ceremony in Beijing on February 24.
