Dechert’s global corporate team was recognized in Legal Week’s British Legal Awards, which were established to celebrate achievement, excellence and innovation in the UK’s legal profession.
Dechert was highly commended in the “M&A Team of the Year (Large Deal)” category for its representation of South Korean memory chip maker SK hynix in the US$18 billion acquisition of Toshiba Corporation’s NAND flash memory and solid-state drive business. SK hynix provided financing via an innovative convertible bond instrument and a fund investment structure.
The acquisition touched on the laws of multiple jurisdictions around the world, including South Korea, the United States, China and Japan. Dechert corporate partner David Cho led a team of more than 50 lawyers from 12 offices on the representation. The convertible bonds used in the acquisition were governed by English law and drafted in London by corporate partner John Markland.
Legal Week also named Dechert as a finalist for ‘International Firm of the Year’, pointing to recent investments in a wave of lateral hires, which has spurred growth in the firm’s London, New York and Washington, D.C. offices, in addition to other key international hubs such as Paris, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Winners were announced at a ceremony in London on November 29.
