Financial Times Ranks Dechert Among Most Innovative International Firms in Asia

The annual report, which combines the Financial Times' independent journalism with extensive research carried out by RSG Consulting, recognizes highly innovative firms whose lawyers have “made a critical contribution to transforming their clients’ businesses.” Firms are judged on the originality of their legal work, the leadership qualities they display and the impact of their work on a client’s business.

Three Dechert matters were included in the 2019 report:

• Highly Commended – Led by partners David Cho and Yang Wang, Dechert advised private equity firm MBK Partners in the sale of China Network Systems, Taiwan’s largest cable TV and broadband operator. The FT praised Dechert’s success in overcoming intense regulatory scrutiny, singling out David Cho for individual commendation.

• Highly Commended – Following legislative changes permitting third-party funding for international arbitration in Singapore, a Dechert team led by Mark Mangan packaged a dormant claim held by a client in order to appeal to funders, ultimately signing a funding agreement with Australia-based IMF Bentham to finance the pioneering claim.

• Commended – Led by Singapore partner Dean Collins, Dechert advised private equity firms Committed Advisors and NewQuest Capital Partners in a complex restructuring and secondaries acquisition involving a portfolio of IT services businesses held by tech investor Basil Partners. The deal involved negotiations with more than 30 parties across several jurisdictions and a 12-tiered “distribution waterfall” used to pay off the different parties
  

At the ceremony, which took place on May 2 at the Asia Society Center in Hong Kong, Dechert was pleased to host Gladys Chun, general counsel at client Lazada, Southeast Asia’s leading internet retailer. The FT named Ms. Chun the most innovative general counsel in Asia-Pacific.
