Global Restructuring Review Names Dechert Among Global Elite for Second Time

For the second consecutive year, Dechert LLP has been named by Global Restructuring Review among the global elite of law firms with leading restructuring and insolvency practices. Firms named to the publication’s "GRR 30" list are assessed on the size and scope of their restructuring teams and on the value, volume and significance of the matters handled.

Dechert was also named a winner in the publication’s GRR Awards in the "Cross-border cooperation in a specific restructuring or insolvency matter" category for its work on the restructuring of Oi S.A., a Brazilian telecommunications provider. In the largest judicial reorganization ever undertaken in Latin America, a Dechert team led by Allan Brilliant, co-chair of the firm’s financial restructuring practice, and partner Shmuel Vasser acted as U.S. and international coordinating counsel to the International Bondholder Committee, one of the largest of Oi’s creditor constituencies. 

The scale and complexity involved in the work for the International Bondholders’ Committee in the Oi matter also led the International Financial Law Review to recognize it as the "Restructuring Deal of the Year" at its IFLR Americas Awards 2019. Just months before, The American Lawyer had named the matter "Global Finance Deal of the Year" in its Global Legal Awards 2018. The transaction was also named a winner in Latin Lawyer’s Deal of the Year Awards 2019, in LatinFinance’s Deals of the Year Awards 2018 and in The M&A Advisor’s Turnaround Awards 2018. Dechert was also named to Turnarounds & Workouts’ 2018 list of leading U.S. law firms with significant Latin American restructuring practices. 

The firm’s financial restructuring practice has recently been recognized for a number of achievements. The M&A Advisor selected the Global A&T Electronics turnaround as its "Restructuring Deal of the Year" in the mid sized cross-border deal category. Acting for an ad hoc group of bondholders, a Dechert team led by financial restructuring co-chair Michael Sage and partner Brian Greer played a pivotal role in negotiations among bondholders, Global A&T and Global A&T’s sponsors.

The firm was also honored when CEE Legal Matters named the US$875 million debt restructuring by Russia’s Far Eastern Shipping Company as 2018 "Deal of the Year for Russia"; Dechert represented an ad hoc committee of bondholders in the matter.

Firms named to this year’s GRR 30 were honored at the 3rd Annual GRR Awards ceremony on June 15 in Barcelona.
