Marjolein De Backer practices in the areas of antitrust and competition law, with a focus on the airline, energy and natural resources, IT and financial services industries. Ms. De Backer has significant experience advising multinational companies on merger control, abuse of dominant position cases, cartel investigations and state aid issues before the EU, UK, and Belgian authorities and courts.

Prior to joining Dechert, Ms. De Backer served as an associate at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft. Her previous experience also includes working as a public policy advisor at Insurance Europe in Belgium and serving as an associate at Linklaters.

  • Aer Lingus in connection with IAG’s €1.4 billion acquisition of Aer Lingus; on its defense of successive hostile takeover bids by Ryanair and appeals in the EU's General Court; and in UK investigations into Ryanair's minority shareholding in Aer Lingus and related UK appeals.
  • A capacitor manufacturer in relation with the Commission’s cartel investigation into the electrolytic capacitor market. 
  • Several IT and media companies as complainants and third parties in the Commission’s investigation of Google’s abuse of dominance practices.
  • Deutsche Börse in connection with its merger with NYSE Euronext. 
  • KBC in connection with its state aid proceedings before the European Commission.
  • Rio Tinto in connection with its defense against BHP Billiton’s hostile takeover bid and its contemplated iron ore joint venture with BHP Billiton.
