Alvaro Galindo* is an International Counsel at Dechert LLP advising on complex international arbitration matters, particularly those involving Latin American jurisdictions. Mr. Galindo’s practice focuses on the representation of sovereign states. Mr. Galindo has been recognized by The Legal 500 Latin America since 2012 and was noted as “outstandingly intelligent” for his international arbitration practice in the 2014 edition.

Prior to joining Dechert, he served as the Director of the International Affairs and Arbitration Unit for the Republic of Ecuador’s Attorney General Office. He acted as a legal consultant for the World Bank Group’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) in Washington, D.C. and the Latin American Development Corporation in Ecuador, where he coordinated the legal group in charge of drafting the Arbitration Law of Ecuador.

Mr. Galindo has significant teaching experience in the areas of international trade, investment, economic and arbitration law, having previously served as Director of Graduate Programs and Vice Dean of the University of San Francisco de Quito School of Law. Currently, he is a Law Professor at Georgetown University Law Center, with a course on Advanced Topics in International Arbitration. He is also Professor of International Commercial Arbitration (Spanish course) at American University, in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Galindo has represented Ecuador in different international and regional forums, among others, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, UNCTAD; the Union of South American Nations Working Group on Dispute Settlement, UNASUR and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law Working Group on Arbitration, UNCITRAL.

In addition, he is a member of the Legal Advisory Task Force (LATF), set up by the Energy Charter Secretariat in 2001 to assist in the drafting of balanced and legally coherent Model Agreements for cross-border oil and gas pipelines.
