China Law & Practice Names Dechert Deal a Finalist for TMT Deal of the Year

China Law & Practice, published in association with The American Lawyer and The Asian Lawyer, has selected a US$1 billion cross-border M&A transaction on which Dechert LLP advised as a finalist for “TMT Deal of the Year” in the China Law & Practice Awards 2017. The contest honors the biggest and most important commercial legal work carried out by international and regional law firms with offices in mainland China.

Dechert acted as lead counsel to the Lazada Group, a Singapore-headquartered internet retailer, in the sale of a controlling stake in the company to China’s Alibaba. The deal, which represented Alibaba’s largest investment to date outside China, placed Lazada’s post-transaction valuation at more than US$2 billion. The Dechert team was led by Munich corporate partner Federico G. Pappalardo.

The complex cross-border deal has already earned a number of accolades. In February, it was chosen by The Asian Lawyer as M&A Deal of the Year for Southeast Asia at the Asia Legal Awards 2017. It has also been chosen as a finalist in awards run by the IFLR, The Lawyer, The M&A Advisor and other legal journals.

Gladys Chun, General Counsel for the Lazada Group, along with her legal team, have also been honored multiple times for their outstanding performance throughout the Alibaba acquisition.

Winners will be announced on September 14 at the Park Hyatt, Beijing.
