American Lawyer Names Private Equity Head Mark Thierfelder “Dealmaker of the Year”

March 28, 2022

Mark Thierfelder, head of Dechert’s global private equity practice and chair of its corporate and securities group, has been named a “Dealmaker of the Year” for 2022 by The American Lawyer for his role in one of the largest buyout transactions since the global financial crisis. The “Dealmaker of the Year” award series, which recognizes the most notable deals of the past year and the attorneys who made them happen, is widely considered one of the most respected accolades in the legal world.

Thierfelder, along with partners Bernardo Piereck and Eric Siegel, led a Dechert team that advised Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC on its part in the acquisition of Illinois-based Medline Industries, one of the country’s largest manufacturers and distributors of medical products. The complex transaction was structured as a multi-investor “club” deal, in which GIC formed part of an investment group alongside H&F, Blackstone and Carlyle. With a reported value of US$34 billion, the transaction was the second-largest buyout since the financial crisis and one of the biggest healthcare buyouts ever.

Dechert has an interdisciplinary team of more than 350 private equity lawyers globally, who act for 300+ clients in some capacity. The firm’s global private equity team advised on more than US$200 billion worth of deals in 2021.

The firm’s success in guiding its clients through many of the private equity industry’s largest and most complex deals led to the firm’s recent recognition by Mergermarket as a top private equity legal advisor.
