David L. Attanasio focuses his practice on international arbitration and international litigation matters, and especially those with significant issues of public international law or foreign law. Dr. Attanasio has experience under the ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICDR, and SCC rules and in the oil and gas, mining, information technology, and construction sectors. He has also acted as secretary for arbitral tribunals in arbitrations conducted under the EDF arbitration rules.

Dr. Attanasio is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, where he co-teaches a course on current topics in investment arbitration. He also regularly teaches at the International Law Institute’s annual program on International Investment Treaties and Investor-State Arbitration. He currently serves as the Chair of the ILA American Branch Investment Law Committee and was a member of the Planning Committee for the ILA American Branch’s annual International Law Weekend conference in 2017.

Prior to joining Dechert, Dr. Attanasio received a Fulbright Fellowship to conduct research on remedies for human rights violations. He has also been a visiting professor of law at the Universidad de los Andes and an associate professor of law at the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, both in Bogotá, Colombia.

  • A Central European State in an UNCITRAL investment dispute with a foreign company relating to the privatization of a formerly State-owned construction company.
  • A South American State in an ICSID investment dispute with a foreign oil company relating to the termination of an oil contract.
  • A South American State in an UNCITRAL investment dispute with a foreign mining company relating to the termination of a mining project.
