Leading White Collar Lawyer Roger Burlingame Joins Dechert in London

June 06, 2018

London – Roger Burlingame has joined leading global law firm Dechert LLP as a partner in London. Uniquely positioned as a former senior U.S. federal prosecutor resident in London, his practice focuses on the white-collar representation of high-level executives and corporations in cross-border investigations and proceedings involving U.S. regulators and prosecutors.

Burlingame has deep experience advising on critical and cutting edge U.S. investigations into alleged financial market manipulation, fraud, collusion and abuse, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) violations throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa, money-laundering and asset forfeiture, and claims of evasion of U.S. taxes in international tax havens. He also advises companies on import/export controls, U.S. sanction violations, and issues relating to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.

Recognized by Chambers & Partners UK as "the go-to guy for any case with a US angle" and by The Legal 500 UK as “the go-to guy for European targets of high-profile US-facing investigations” Burlingame is lauded as "fierce advocate," "loyal confidante," and “great communicator who is smart, strategic and has a great manner with clients."

Burlingame will serve as a transatlantic cornerstone for a global litigation practice with more than 350 lawyers around the world. Dechert’s global investigations and white-collar defense practice is a world-recognized leader in large, complex and high-stakes investigations. The firm has successfully represented clients in single-and multi-jurisdictional matters in virtually all substantive areas of white-collar defense, including public and private businesses; executives, officers and other individuals; and boards of directors and audit committees.

“Roger is recognized as the undisputed market leader among lawyers representing U.K. and EMEA-based clients who may have exposure in the U.S.,” said Andrew Levander, chair of Dechert’s policy committee. “His addition provides our European clients with a lawyer on the ground who is a former U.S. prosecutor with deep experience in cross-border white-collar criminal defense, internal investigations and regulatory enforcement matters – a capability matched by only a few global firms.”

Burlingame added “As a white-collar market leader in high-stakes individual representations and cross-border corporate investigations on both sides of the Atlantic, Dechert provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity to grow my practice.”

Earlier in his career, Burlingame served as the Chief of the Public Integrity Section and Senior Trial Counsel in the Business and Securities Fraud Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, where among other accolades, he received the Stimson Medal, provided annually to the top federal prosecutor in each of the two U.S. Attorney’s Offices covering the greater New York City area. He was also an adjunct professor at New York University School of Law, where he taught classes on U.S. federal prosecution for many years. Burlingame earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin.

Recent additions to the global team include distinguished white collar and investigations partners David Kelley (New York), Benjamin Rosenberg (New York), and Michael McGinley (Washington), renowned international trade partners Amanda DeBusk and Melissa Duffy (Washington), leading commercial litigation partners Laurent Martinet (Paris), Christina Sarchio (Washington), David Stern (Los Angeles) and Stephen Surgeoner (London), and marquee product liability and mass torts partners Sheila Birnbaum, Mark Cheffo and Douglas Fleming (New York).
