New York Law Journal Honors Dechert Product Liability Team Again
For the second consecutive year, Dechert’s Product Liability and Mass Tort group has been named “Litigation Department of the Year for Product Liability” by the New York Law Journal in its New York Legal Awards.
The awards honor attorneys and judges who have, in the publication’s view, made “a remarkable difference in the legal profession in New York” – whether in shaping the law, achieving outsized results for their clients, being an outstanding jurist or assisting those in need of legal services.
Led by nationally respected trial lawyers Mark Cheffo and Sheila Birnbaum, the Dechert team has found creative means to resolve a number of litigations involving long-time clients. For instance, as national defense counsel for Purdue Pharma, the team spearheaded the first proposed comprehensive global resolution of all state and federal cases against a defendant in the nationwide Opioid Litigation. Consistent with the proposed settlement, which is valued at US$10 billion to US$12 billion, Purdue filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with the intent of ultimately transitioning its assets into a new public trust operating for public benefit.
For Pfizer, Dechert achieved important victories in litigation relating to its top-selling statin, Lipitor. The team also secured a dismissal for Saint-Gobain in litigation relating to the tragic fire at London’s Grenfell Tower in 2017.
In January, the Dechert team was named “Product Liability Group of the Year” by Law360 for the second year in a row.
Winners in the New York Law Journal’s New York Legal Awards will be recognized at a ceremony at the Marriott Marquis, New York on October 27.
