Gus Black, global co-chair of Dechert's financial services group, focuses his practice on investment funds (emphasizing private equity, debt and hedge funds), establishing and restructuring international asset management businesses, corporate and commercial transactions in the asset management sector and general UK financial services regulation.

In the sphere of private fund formation, Mr. Black has advised sponsors and cornerstone investors on the structuring, re-structuring, formation and investment of numerous funds and other co-investment structures ranging widely in size, strategy and focus (including numerous hedge strategies, hybrid, private equity, public and private debt, emerging markets, clean tech/energy, agriculture, infrastructure, commodities and real estate). He has advised on funds established in various jurisdictions including Jersey, Guernsey, Cayman Islands, BVI, Luxembourg, Ireland, Singapore, Mauritius, Delaware and England. He also advises on a range of portfolio investments, secondaries and other portfolio transactions.

Mr. Black is recommended by Chambers UK 2018 and 2017 in the area of investment funds. The 2018 guide states that he is "exceptional in fund structuring and related matters, commercial and very responsive" according to sources. He is particularly noted for his strength in hedge funds but has broader expertise in private equity and debt funds. The 2017 guide cites clients as commenting that he is "excellent, incredibly attentive and unbelievably knowledgeable. He's able to guide us through regulatory and legal issues." Mr. Black is also recommended in the area of investment funds by The Legal 500 UK 2017 and 2016 editions. The 2016 edition states that he is "without a doubt one of the top lawyers in the funds space." He is also recommended by Chambers UK 2016 which states that he undertakes a wide spectrum of work for asset management businesses, from fund formation to Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) regulation and the establishment of co-investment structures. The guide also notes that his varied practice covers hedge, private equity, emerging markets and infrastructure funds. 

Mr. Black is listed as a leading lawyer by the 2016 and 2017 editions of Who's Who Legal Private Funds. The publication notes that he has a "strong reputation in the market for his advice in relation to fund formation and always goes the extra mile for his clients." In 2015, Private Funds Management named Mr. Black in its list of the “top 30 private funds lawyers under 40”. The list of influential private equity lawyers has been identified by the industry and by their own peers as the best of the best in the field. Mr. Black is also recommended in the area of investment funds by The Legal 500 in its 2015 UK guide which provides client testimony that he is 'excellent at providing tailor-made advice'. Mr. Black is also recommended as a leading lawyer in his field in Chambers UK 2015 which states that he is recognised for his broad practice and capability on multi-jurisdictional mandates and provides client testimony that he is "incredibly knowledgeable - when we're looking to launch quite a bespoke product he has almost always had experience in something similar." Mr. Black has been recommended for Investment Funds since 2012 in The Legal 500 UK where he was described as "very impressive" and “very knowledgeable” and highlighted for showing “reliable judgement” in 2013. Mr. Black's publications include the “Private Equity Funds” chapter of Sweet & Maxwell’s Law and Regulation of Investment Management and the UK chapter of the European Lawyer Reference Series on Hedge Funds.
